Old Cottage Gardens
Redevelopment of a locally listed building into six luxurious residential units, including a premium penthouse.
Originally constructed in 1912, the former hospital exemplifies the Arts and Crafts architectural movement, characterised by its emphasis on craftsmanship, material authenticity, and harmonious design. From an architectural standpoint, the adaptive reuse project was approached with a focus on conservation and enhancement—ensuring that the integrity of the original structural and decorative elements was preserved while integrating modern interventions.
Each residential unit has been carefully designed to introduce contemporary spatial layouts, prioritising open-plan living areas that maximize natural daylight penetration through strategic fenestration. The design balances modern functionality with historic character by retaining key architectural features such as original moldings, window proportions, and material palettes, thus respecting the building’s heritage while meeting current living standards.
The top-floor penthouse, a luxury three-bedroom unit encompassing over 1800 square feet, demonstrates a thoughtful architectural approach to vertical circulation and privacy. It benefits from a dedicated private entrance and a bespoke lift shaft that serves only this unit, allowing for an exclusive access strategy that enhances both convenience and exclusivity without compromising the building’s original vertical core design.
